Pull Up A Chair. We've got your child, and you.
The Porch is where we gather — Black parents and guardians, across the diaspora, every kind of family raising Black children in independent school rooms that weren't built for them.
One topic a month. Real talk, real tools, real strategy… so our kids don't just survive these schools. They thrive, fully seen, fully supported, and fully protected.
The Gatherings.
Not a venting circle, though you can vent. Not a workshop, though you'll leave with tools. It's the porch: where we rest and where we keep watch. Where you don't have to translate yourself, because you're already understood.
Pull up a chair. We've got your child, and you.
Four Pillars. Four Promises.
Gather
We come together on purpose. Connection is the work, not the warm-up — because isolation is what these spaces count on, and we refuse it.
Learn
We name what's actually happening: the policies, the patterns, the quiet curriculum - and we trade real tools, not theory. Clarity is power.
Protect
We advocate with skill and spine. We learn when to ask, when to document, when to escalate, and how to make sure our children are seen, believed, and protected.
Restore
We protect our own light, too. Joy is not a reward for surviving these schools, it's how we outlast them.
Twelve Months. One Chair.
Welcome to the Porch
Why we gather, and what our children carry that the school never sees. We set the table, name the year ahead, and build the room we'll come back to.
Reading the Room
Decoding a school's real culture versus its brochure. How to map the power, the players, and the unwritten rules in your child's building.
When the School Calls
Discipline, "fit," and the discipline gap — how our children get read as older, angrier, and sassier. Plus the practical part: naming harm, documenting it, and knowing when to escalate.
Raising Them Whole
The identity conversation at home. Helping our children know exactly who they are, countering what the school tries to tell them.
Seen as Capable
Academic advocacy in practice — tracking, gifted and honors access, and getting your child read as bright when bias says otherwise.
The Code-Switch Tax
Belonging, assimilation, and the quiet cost of fitting in. Protecting your child's full self when the price of comfort is a piece of who they are.
The Real Ones
Telling allies from performers. Reading staff and fellow parents, and building a network that actually shows up when it counts.
The Money Conversation
Financial aid, the hidden costs these schools never list, and the class dynamics nobody warns you about. How to fund the experience without your child paying for it socially.
Protecting the Light
Mental health, affirmation, and joy. Finding affirming care, spotting the strain, and guarding our children's spirit as fiercely as their grades.
The Long Game
College counseling equity, recommendations, and advocacy that starts long before senior year. Making the system work for our children, not around them.
Ties into UndeniableThe Social World
Friendships, dating, sleepovers, and exclusion. Helping our children navigate the social life of these schools — and helping us navigate the parent side of it.
Passing It On
What we learned, what we're carrying forward, and how we welcome the next family to the porch. We close the year by becoming the network we wished we'd had.
